Scholarship for Practice: Scholarship for practice requires the nurse to assimilate current evidence into the practice of nursing (FSU, 2012). The use of evidence and data to support the work we do as nurses and health care professionals is crucial. This is the only way to assuredly make change to the processes set in place. If something is trialed and proven to be an effective practice, it is our duty and our lifelong professional goal to keep current with these Evidence Based Best Practices and continue to provide the very best care for our patients.
The first example of this practice that focuses on evidence based proactive care is my work developing the Partnership for a Better Recovery Program at my hospital. We used current research that focused on preventative strategies with the goal of preventing complications following surgery in our patients. We implemented a program that included a pre-surgical checklist, education, preventative tools, and diabetes management prior to surgery. The patients participating had improved outcomes and importantly too, appreciation for the efforts by staff to keeping them safe. Through this project I learned the importance of evidence based research when developing programs and policies. We were able to make a positive impact in the surgical patient population with our efforts.

The second example I have is an evidence based issue analysis power point presentation on mandatory healthcare worker vaccinations. For this project, I worked collaboratively with another student to research the safest ways for staff and their patients to protect themselves from the influenza virus. We gathered a wide array of information including the many various stances taken on the topic by employees. We used objectivity for this assignment to gather information and present it without bias. This assignment taught me the importance of understanding personal bias, while remaining objective in our education to patients. I was unable to upload the powerpoint to this site, due to the largeness of the file, but a pdf version is included here.

The third example is a power point project I worked on collaboratively with a group of nursing students on obesity. We explored the subject of obesity in America and the negatively effects seen in patient populations. We then researched strategies towards improving this troubling statistic and included an action plan based on evidence. We also brainstormed many interventions to be successful with our implementation, and identified metrics to track our outcomes to evaluate effectiveness of our program. Through this assignment, we were able to work cohesively in a group environment, identify a population at risk, research effective strategies to improve patient outcomes, and monitor effectiveness of our interventions.

Through these activities and many more throughout my BSN journey, I have seen time and again, how important it is to ensure our practice is backed by evidence. In a profession that is ever-changing, I have learned how important it is to stay current in our skills and the care we provide. After working on many projects throughout this program with aims to improve outcomes in a wide variety of settings, all of the projects were anchored in evidence based research. I also learned the importance of remaining objective and being mindful of potential bias when providing care.
