Collaborative Leadership: Collaborative Leadership outcomes demonstrate nursing roles in the provision, delegation, and supervision of nursing care while retaining accountability for patient safety and the quality of that care (FSU, 2012). In the changing and growing world of health care, it is important to have a successful collaboration of nursing leaders. It is through therapeutic communication, proper networking, strong relationships, integrity, and professionalism where true change can be seen to result in better outcomes for the patients we serve and care for (Milstead, 2006). The following are examples of my achievements in meeting the outcomes for Collaborative Leadership.
6 traits were recommended by the Handbook of Nursing Leadership:
"1) Develop trust and create safety; 2) perform self-reflection and apply personal continuous quality improvement (CQI); 3) share power and influence; 4) assess the environment for collaboration; 5) develop clarity-visioning and mobility and 6) develop people coaching and mentoring."

My first example is my interview with a nurse leader in the hospital setting while in Nursing 440 Leadership in Nursing, at Ferris State University. Through this interview I gained so much knowledge about the complexity and interworking’s of the health care field. So much is required for successful implementation of quality improvement projects and project leading. This role requires a positive attitude, an assertive mindset, and ability to collaborate and network with other disciplines, while maintaining a professional and respectful demeanor. The level of collaboration was very eye opening with this interview. In order to successfully implement change, it is necessary to identify the very thing all disciplines can agree upon and grow upon that. Leaders are also in the position of being an advocate for the patient and the staff as well. they are responsible for presenting to leadership updates on progress and communications from frontline staff, and also patients in their care. This role also requires that the leader be mindful of the financial impact of quality improvement projects and the organizations reimbursement environment, how it influences patient outcomes, and also how it effects the bottom line. This assignment demonstrated to me the importance of good leadership and the qualities needed to effectively lead. These attributes are vital to our success in healthcare. The importance of managers and strong leadership was very apparent and my understanding of this will continue to help me in my career in leadership in the future.

For my second example, I worked collaboratively in a group to analyze the significance of wait times in the Emergency Department. Working in a group requires great skills in communication, delegation, and timeliness. Research for this assignment revealed the negative impact that crowding in the Emergency Department has on patient outcomes. Crowding compromises access to emergency care, delaying physician assessments, diagnosis, and critical treatment plans. Through this assignment I learned the importance of data collection. In order to improve outcomes for your patients, it is essential to fully research the problem in order to best determine a plan to improve any process. Data collection is important to be able to monitor effectiveness of your interventions. It is also important to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team and research many different viable interventions to determine the best course of action to any improvement project. Collaborative Leadership is necessary to improve patient outcomes and provide excellent nursing care for our patients and through this project I learned how important this collaboration truly is.

I have included documentation of my current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Instructor card and also my Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor card. Being an instructor for both requires that I am skilled at facilitating a group education class for both Basic and Advanced Life Support protocols. It also means I ensure the students enrolled in my class are skilled and proficient in all the various algorithms for the class. I demonstrate leadership by setting the tone for the class and simulation, and provide feedback and critiques as needed. Both classes include a collaborative skills check list at the end of the simulation where I demonstrate the roles of the various team members during an arrest situation. This requires me to be aware of how the team interacts with each other, and ensure they are satisfying the many requirements for a successful team resuscitation.
