Professionalism: Professionalism demonstrates a level of professionalism that is congruent with the inherent values, ethics and behaviors of the discipline of nursing (FSU, 2011). "Professionals are defined as individuals who display competence and skillful behaviors that are in alignment with their profession" (Gokenbach, 2013). It is important to uphold the values of our nursing profession. "Some of the values of the professional nurse are: "Honesty, responsibility, pursuit of new knowledge, belief in human dignity, equality of all patients, and the desire to prevent and alleviate suffering" (Gokenback, 2013). Professionalism impacts the way in which the patients and the community perceive healthcare professionals. This makes it vitally important to present ourselves outwardly in a professional manner and to also be mindful of our non-verbal’s and communications skills. All subjects taught in the nursing program are tools we will use in our careers to help us demonstrate our caring and nurturing ability to help heal, our commitment to patient advocacy, and our professional manner in which we carry out a wide array of challenging tasks.
The first example I have of my professionalism is through my professional evaluation and development analysis done in NURS 440. Having the courage to ask for honest feedback on performance is essential to professional growth. Through this self-evaluation I was able to assess my abilities to receive feedback from coworkers and identify my own willingness to accept the feedback as a crucial step to self growth. As a professional, this feedback is so valuable to learn better ways of practicing, and to fine tune the approaches we have with coworkers and patients. Professional engagement is also important in distinguishing nurses who are just employed in a job vs. those pursuing a career. An engaged professional will seek opportunities to better themselves to empowered to seek additional sills to provide better care to their patients. This level of engagement has a positive effect on patient outcomes (Wang, 2013, p.288).

The second project I worked on that highlighted my work towards meeting the professional outcome standards in nursing is through my work on a service learning project in my community of Essexville Michigan. Many elderly are at risk for falls, and many calls are placed to the public safety department for lift assists and assistance following falls. It was identified that more education and resources were needed by the residents. It was also determined that the firefighters and police officers were in need of assistance from community agencies and physician offices to better offer assistance and appropriate follow up for their patients. I showed professionalism throughout this project in my interactions with the many people involved. I dressed and spoke professionally during my service hours while corresponding with area agencies. In all my written correspondences and education I demonstrated professionalism with work that was free of errors, and maintained reliability in my scheduled appointments at the Public Safety Department.

As a nursing professional, it is important to maintain professionalism at all times. This promotes an environment of safety and security for patients in our care, and portrays the integrity of the profession we have taken a duty to uphold. As nurses, we must ensure all of our interactions both verbal and non-verbal are conducted in the most reputable way. It is also our duty as nursing professionals to commit to maintaining our skills and required training and commit to ensuring that our care be evidence based.
